What is Digital Sublimation Printing?

A full color digital print technology that works with polyester substrates and polymer coated substrates. This process is great if you're looking to print oversized images with multiple colors. Or, if you want to offer something different than traditional screen printing. There is no textured feel to this process.

Sublimation dyes are carried via liquid ink and deposited on a high-release inkjet paper to then be transferred onto the substrates.

The print technology requires a combination of time, temperature and pressure to “transfer” the sublimation dyes into the polyester molecules on the substrate from the high-release inkjet paper. The conventional equipment for transferring a sublimation transfer is a heat press.

The result of this process is a virtually permanent full color, high-resolution print that will not crack, fade or peel from the substrate under normal conditions. Most sublimation dyes start to sublimate at 350 degrees Fahrenheit but 380-420 degrees is recommended for most substrates to attain maximum color.

Digital sublimation printing works on white and light colored, polyester or poly coated substrates. Athletic textiles, sports performance apparel, ceramic products and poly coated fiber reinforced plastic are some of the main product categories. Digital sublimation printing is also used in the creation of trade show displays, snowboards, skis and skateboards.

Software Tools

Sublimation can manage high quality photographic art files and vector files as well. Like most forms of full color digital printing, the designs are created in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator design software.

Expected Results

Sublimation is an amazing process that allows for vibrant, full color, all-over prints.
However, it’s not magic — our cadre of on-staff sorcerers are working to rectify that.
Until then, expect imperfections from the process, especially around seams and folds.

Single-Sided Prints

Single-sided prints will show the bare garment color on the non-printed side. Typical sublimation apparel is only available in white. Single-sided prints will clearly show the unprinted side if you use the full print area.

White Streaks

Expect to have smudges, blurs and creasing near edges, seams and collars. When printing flat artwork onto a constructed garment, it’s impossible not to have some imperfections, particularly under the arm.

Design Within These Limitations

Artwork that embraces these limitations works best and enhances the look of the shirt. Patterns or graphics strategically placed in problem areas can help hide any imperfections and smudges from your customer.

Shifting On Press

Images shift up to 1″ on press and are not able to be aligned front-to-back. Keep this in mind when designing. Color blocking or trying to line up graphics with apparel seams may produce unsatisfactory results.

Web Images

Be careful using images from the Internet. High-quality prints require raster artwork that’s at least 150 dpi. Low resolution files can look great on screen but print blurry or jagged.

File Setup

Proper file setup ensures that your files print as you intended without production delays.

File Requirements

  • Sublimation artwork must come on Supplied Template file.
  • Vector Files: PDF / EPS / AI • Raster Files: PDF / PSD

Sublimation File Guidelines

  • You must include print files for every garment size in your order.
( Note, template is not applicable to all brands of shirts.)
  • PDF files must be layered and editable.
  • Artwork should be saved in CMYK Color Mode.
  • Make sure your artwork bleeds 1" over any edges, including the collar. Prints can shift up to 1″ on press.
  • Ensure that all raster files (or linked images) are built at 150 dpi.
  • All art should be at the exact size you want it to appear.
  • Rasterize or Outline any type/fonts.
  • All artwork must come on the supplied Template. Do not flatten your artwork onto the template layers.
  • If your files do not meet these requirements, please consult with your Sales person to discuss other options.
